Yes, you find out there ingame name and add them to your list. Then you can see when they're online and message them, even if you're nowhere near each other

You can message your friends even if they are offline. They would read your message the next time they log in.

Really? I never knew... Hmm. Thanks for that message DATD.

You can whisper people any time in the game though.

I believe the hotkey was 'n' to open the list in-game. It's helpful, but could still use some smoothing before release.

Anyone know if there's a limit to how many friends you can add to it, and if so, how many?

I think it's limited to 50 people, I know I hit the limit some BWEs ago. Haven't really counted, though.

It's really handy, especially with the so ,far unmentioned, feature that you'll see if your friend is online even if he's on another character than the one you first typed in. As long as they're all on the same account, of course.

But I can only repeat myself: Please give us more friend slots, Anet. Or at least combine the 'friends' and 'ignore' slots into a common pool.

I have yet to put someone on 'ignore' in several years of online gaming, but I know that I'll certainly meet many new friends in Guildwars...and that's what it's all about in the end, isn't it ?

Oh, and please make the list of guildmembers the same in functionality as the friends list, in that a click on a name opens a 'whisper channel' to that character. It is a bit unwieldy to have to have to open the 'friends list' for that, not to mention the fact that it eats up more slots.

And don't let me get into the myriad reasons why guildleaders and officers need even longer friends list...

Well, I hope that helped answering your questions somewhat...and remember that more friends=good , dear forum-prowling Anet employees.

Bleys

Edit: spelling. Oh no !

They dropped the length of the friend's list to around 25 people recently.

I have no idea why they made it so short. What exactly do we gain by limiting us to only 20something contacts?

Peace,

ah that's a shame... i hope they increase it because i'm going to fill that easily and quickly
edit: just thought... where do your guild members go? do you have to add them to your friends list? because how are you suppost to get many in your friends list, along with other friends, if the limit is around 20? i'm guessing there's a seperate guild list, right...?

Hi Diabolus (Are you on the SoF forums?); there are several channels of speech running at any time - there is global (everyone), team (those in your party), guild (all guild members) and whisper (person to person), each of which are in their own colour so you can tell how someone is contacting you. You can get hold of anyone in the guild by talking on the guild channel - once they answer it's as easy as clicking their name to whisper them, making it private (so you don't disturb the guild channel too much - some guilds don't like you to have extended conversations on the guild channel as it makes it hard to use for contacting folks and such). There is also a guild status screen showing who in the guild is on, I think you can use that to contact them as well.

25? OMG, that's just insane! The only workaround I can imagine, is getting all your friends to join your guild (or you joining theirs).

And I also kinda miss a friends-channel. Just like all the other games, Normal/Whisper/Friend/Guild/Pizza-channels for the chat

And so I wonder what will happen to those who already have over 25 players listed in the friends tab.

On another note, I just wanted to see if I'm missing seeing this, but does it actually show on your screen when your friend comes online, as opposed to having to open the friends list to see if he/she is online?

PS: I agree, there should be more than 25.

You need to open your friend's list, thank the gods. I don't need more spam in my chat window -- if I want to know if someone is on or not, I'll check.

you should be able to choose if you get notifications of your friend's status' and maybe choose which friends you get them on. might be a bit too complex for a friends list though

It isn't exactly 25, but it's somewhere around there. I hit the cap last BWE and had to start deleting people to make space.

Peace,

What's it like to have friends?

Hopefully they will change the amount for release. Most people made so many friends during beta. Now just imagine once a larger crowd starts to play.
